LOWER MANHATTAN

Rendered concept sketch

The design brief for this class was to reimagine an existing office building located at 65 Bleeker Street as a new hotel. Taking inspiration from the building's architect and the chaotic melting pot of architectural styles that became hallmarks of the era in which it was built, The Sullivan Hotel is a contemporary translation of Gilded Age excess. Edith Wharton's description of 19th century American architecture and design as a period of "dubious eclecticism" thus forms the guiding concept for this hotel, where incongruous pairings of colors, patterns, and objects nevertheless result in an exciting visual harmony.
